         That was probably one of my posts.  In 2000, at the Florida rally, 
the DoT came out and inspected hitches; they found lots of weld cracks, 
and, yes, GM was a major culprit.  However, Ford and Dodge OEM receivers 
were also faulty, but they did something about it; don't think GM has.
         At the Georgia Rally this year, one of our members (Georgia Unit 
032) volunteered to inspect hitches, lights, tires, etc.  He found an 
alarming number of loose hitch balls, undersized hitch balls, and several 
hitches that had cracks, one almost all the way through.
         Everyone should periodically inspect their hitch receivers and 
their hitch-ball carriers, and should ensure that the ball capacity is 
sufficient for the trailer they tow.  When the weld yields, or when a 
weakened weld is stressed severely, or an undersized ball gives way, it's 
too late.  A 2-minute inspection can save lots of grief.  Doug Showker goes 
around the country for Reese, giving safety seminars.  Unfortunately, his 
advice is not heeded long term, i.e., we go out and inspect right after a 
seminar or something like that, then get lax about it.  I'm no 
exception.  I guess nagging is the only cure.
         We are all saddened by Tom's experience. and glad he and his 
family are safe, with relatively minor injuries.  It doesn't sound like a 
receiver problem to me, however.
