Jerry,
A standard differential applies maximum torque to the wheel with the
minimum of traction, a limited slip differential applies maximum torque
to the wheel with the maximum traction.  This works not only in slick
situations, but even during normal cornering which improves overall
handling.  This is why you will find LSDs installed in such cars as the
vette.  A limited slip differential does little to help if both wheels
are in mud or slick conditions, but it will always transfer the torque
to the wheel with the most traction even when that wheel offers only
marginally more traction. The transfer of power is proportional to the
difference in traction between the two wheels.  

4WDs have the advantage of being able to transfer power not only left
and right, but front to back, so if ANY wheel has better traction it
gets the lions share of torque.  Some 4WDs can also lock the center
differential for a fixed front to back distribution and with locking
wheel hubs, can lock the front or rear differentials as well, but modern
4WD systems use electronics to detect and control power distribution so
user involvement is pretty much zero.
