John - Welcome to a great source of valuable information. Others here will
chime in, but I've found that there is no substitute for getting all the
wheelbase you can. I pull a 30' Classic with an F-250 crew cab and love it.
Do you 'need' 4X4? Depends on how you plan to use your trailer. If all you
ever want to do is pull from one RV park to another I'd say you could do
without it. You can pay for a lot of tow trucks for the cost of the 4X4
option. But if you want to get out and away from civilization, definitely
get the 4x4. Chevy has a great 4x4 dash mounted system that is push button
for on & off. Bottom line is that you need the long wheelbase for good safe
towing, to give you the best control of the total rig. 4x4 is (to me) just a
really nice luxury to have.
