Re: [A/S] GMC Safari for '63 BAMBI

I used to tow with a '91 Chevy Asto. It had a premium
gas V6 and the factory tow package, including a 4.10
rear axle (I think they only have up to a 3.73 today).
Its towing capacity was 6,000 lbs. I towed in 3rd
gear. I pulled a 21' Hi-Lo for several years and then
picked up an aluminum framed 28' SOB. While I could
handle the weight from a towing capacity, the 28'
trailer just exerted to much force on the Astro in
windy conditions. I needed a lot more mass to control
that big trailer and eventually went to a full size
van.

I'm not sure of the towing capacity of the new model
vans, but GM downgraded the capacities after 1991 so
it is possible that the capacity is in the 5000-5500
lb. range. Having the 4wd will reduce towing capacity
even more.

With that said, the Astro was a very reliable truck.
I kept it 8 years, never spending a penny on repairs.
From a gas usage standpoint it did about 17mpg in the
city. Towing my 28' trailer I did between 11-13 mpg.
