The GMC.com site states:
6.6 Duramax (diesel) with automatic transmission (Allison is only automatic
available) 310 HP @ 3000 RPM and 590 lb-ft torque at 1600 RPM
8.1 (gas) 330 HP @ 4200 RPM and 450 lb-ft torque at 3200 RPM
As shown above, the 8.1 does have more HP than the Duramax, but the Duramax
has more torque. The big advantage to the Duramax, or the other diesels, is
the RPM where these maximum values are achieved. A diesel engine seems to loaf
as it is pulling up a big hill because of the lower RPM required.
In October, 2000, trailer Life had a nice article comparing the
Duramax/Allison and the 8.1 gas. There is no question that the 8.1 is a very strong
engine, but it does like a lot of fuel.
