Hi Guys,
I pulled a 34' Limited about 50,000 miles with a Sierra 2500 (not the HD
version, because there was not one in 2000) that had the 6 L Vortec with the
4:10 rear (the largest gas engine available in 2000), and found that to be a
very good tow truck. I could hold my own with the GM, Ford and Dodge Diesels
when traveling together in the Caravans I went on. I pulled all through the
Rockies (three different trips), and to Alaska with no problems at all. I
did have the overdrive version Hensley Arrow to help push on steep hills. I
got between 9.5 and 10.0 MPG when towing, and 16 to 18 when driving in flat
country empty. I kept a spread sheet on my laptop computer with every gallon
of gas I put in the truck until the day I sold it. I never lost 1 minute of
down time because the truck had a problem during any of my trips. I hope the
2004 2500 HD Duramax Crew Cab SLT does as well on the up time. I have only
towed from Wilmington, NC, to Sarasota, FL, with the new truck. I think it
is going to work well though. The first tank of fuel while hooked to the
trailer netted 451 miles on 35.303 gallons of fuel (12.764 MPG) - I replaced
the 26 gallon tank with a 45 gallon unit from Transfer Flow. The 2500 HD
Sierra was not available with the Quadrastear feature in 2004. The 2500
Sierra, which is a up sprung 1/2 ton instead of the true 3/4 ton frame and
running gears of the 2500 HD, offered it as an option in 2004. I wanted the
4 wheel steering, but could not order it on my 2004 HD version. I will bet
it shows up on the 2500 HD for 2005.
