The modern microwave oven form factor was introduced by Amana as the
RadarRange) in the late 60s. GE actually sold a microwave oven back in
the 50s (53-54 timeframe), but it was very expensive, very large (size
of stove) and had a small heating cavity.  It is always amazing how most
things that seem to suddenly appear many times have been around in one
form or another for a significant time.
