I guess it depends on how it's made.

I used scissors to cut the casing open. Inside there might be various 
arrangements of foam, cotton batting or other materials. I used a 
serrated knife to cut the foam or scissors. Before I did anything, I 
made a line on the outside and on the guts to show where it should end 
up. Then I folded the casing over and slip stitched it back together by 
hand.

Since futons don't use metal springs or frames, it's pretty easy to 
customize them. If you are near a college town, you may find that a 
futon place will cheaply customize it for you.

Futons are usually lighter too.
