Re: [A/S] Digest Number 1971

I highly recommend the new Magellan systems. They are pretty pricey, but man
they are incredible and are really completely automatic, no real set up or
programming. Just type in an address and off you go. They remember all past
destinations, they prompt every turn with advance warnings. Immediately recalculate
if you miss a turn so you don't have to turn around. They can locate all
local restaurants, gas stations, points of interest, and emergency facilities.
They are accurate down to about 4 feet, and they have voice prompts for each
direction so you don't have to be distracted by the screen, as well as maps and
listed directions. They are small and portable and can easily be moved from car
to car, and once you have downloaded the maps from your computer, they only
need to be plugged into your cigarette lighter. They also show distance and
time to your destination (calculated at current speed), as well as distance to
the next turn or direction change and the name of the street that you are on.
They can be programmed for fastest time, shortest distance, Highways only, or no
highways as a desired route. The cheap ones start at 500 to 600, and the top
of the line units run from 900 to 1200. The Garmin Street Pilot is almost as
good, and they are a bit cheaper, but I really feel that the Magellan is well
worth the slight premium, especially if you don't typically bring your computer
along!
