if you get short shrift here, consider joining one of the several HAM 
newsgroups a good one might be rec.radio.shortwave

Also, do join the ARRL and go to its website and pick out an antenna book 
from its "store" pages.  Sounds to me as if you are looking for a multiband 
vertical which could be mounted on your trailer tongue and the laid over onto 
some support structure on the roof and bungeed down while on teh road.
That is what I am looking at doing on my 77 Sovereign.  Have you taken your
tests for a license yet?
