Should you drop your unit or have a mechanical failure, which in today's
laptops are less and less, all you need is a major brand, HP, Dell, Gateway.

They all have good repair plans and turn around time. I assume Apple is the 
same
but since I'm a Microsoft Freak I don't know for sure.

I have two laptops, an HP and a Dell.  Both now are over two years old.

The HP was purchased new at Best Buy as a demo model - $2200.00 retail 
Saved 50%.
Most stores will greatly discount a model change.  Just ask them.

The Dell is a Computer show special for $500.00

Both have -

DVD/CD Read/Write (Good for saving files photos, playing movies etc.)
2 USB ports (For printer, scanner, spare drive, Phone adapter, Satellite 
Internet, etc.)
Serial and parallel port. ( For mic, printer, Satellite Internet, etc.)
512 and 256 Meg of Ram (the more the better)
80 Gig Hard Drive( Program's and Photo's take up space quickly)
Wireless cards for WiFi
Phone port RS232 (for internet in library or camp ground)
Ether net port (for wired networking
Carry Case-  (For when you drop it :>)


My hard drive crashed on my HP (I dropped it about 5') they returned it in 
three days
no charge I paid frieght one way. (I was still in the warrantee period.)

Warranty, where they come to you, is ALWAYS built into the cost
and is like buying a maintenance contract on a Sears appliance.  Generally 
never used.
