[A/S] atwood water heater

hello,
i have a 6 gallon atwood water heater. i know the owner's manuel says 
to flush twice yearly. seems to me i have read NOT to use an anod rod 
in the water heater but can not find where i read this. the owner's 
manuel makes no reference to this.
