Hi Jim,

Unless you are both featherweights (literally) I don't see the bed opening up 
while you're in it.

As for how to do it... sounds pretty easy.  It's basically a box frame with a 
hinged top.  

Go look at a diesel pusher motorhome at an RV dealer... peek under the 
bedspread and you'll see how it's done.  Lift up the whole platform to see the 
hardware.... I bet it's a couple hour project, at most...
