[A/S] Zinc problem

My mother-in-law always called the kitchen sink a "zinc".
Must be a German thing, I guess. B^)

Anyway, the kitchen sink in our 2000 28' Excella
looks like it's porcelain.  But now its started to peel!
It's painted or coated with something like white paint!
What is it?  And more importantly how do I fix it?
Anyone have this problem before?  Could I remove
all of the coating and have a stainless steel sink?
