Driving and backing a fifth wheel is like most any new skill or new tool,
you have to get used to it.  When I was driving semi's all week long, I got
to where I could hardly drive a car.  I would swing way out wide in
intersections, and turn the wrong way when I tried to back up.   A fifth
wheel is more maneuverable than a bumper hitch trailer, because it can swing
to a much sharper angle in relationship to the tow vehicle, but it takes a
different line going both forward and backwards.  You can U-turn a 40' semi
trailer in about 43' of space. It would take a time and a half as much room
to U-turn a similar bumper pull trailer.  And you probably wouldn't do it in
one pass.  Understanding a fifth wheel's characteristics and some practice
will make it work like it should.
