There are several primers on the market that will adhere to just about 
any surface you can throw at it. Formica, plastic, ceramic tile, 
aluminum siding and gutters, etc. You don't have to sand or degloss 
these surfaces, just the normal prep you would do for any paint job. 
Once you have primed your surface with this material, your can topcoat 
it with pretty much anything you want, even wall paper. I used one of 
those new hi tech ceramic paints, that reflects heat and cold. The 
benefit is you don't use as much propane to heat and your air 
conditioner can be turned down a notch or two and maintain a nice cool 
unit.. 

The product that I use is made by Zinnser, the name is Bulls eye 1-2-3. 
It's a water based product and can be top coated in an hour. I have not 
had anything that I have used it on to this point, fail. I've used it on 
plastic (ie nose cone, shower),  the composite wall board and wood 
paneling in the house to apply wall paper over. I haven't tried it on 
aluminum yet, but that is my next project. I am going to try the name 
plates and the blue painted trim, even if it doesn't work it can't look 
any worst than it does now.
