Daisy,

I had a Mercedes 300SD with a 5 cylinder engine of 3.0 liters and put 
560,000 trouble free miles on the engine before I sold it.  The 5 
cylinder engine has been around for many years, in fact Volvo has a 5 
cylinder gas engine now.
