I run a free wireless access node from my house here in Portland Oregon.

Most laptop cards have a program that you can pull up that will show you if 
you in range of a free or a "for pay" hot spot.  If you are running blind, 
just turn on your laptop, launch the program that came with your wireless 
card, and wait 2 or three minutes.  Remember that metal screens (as opposed 
to nylon or some other material) can cut out a wire less transmission, or 
at least reduce it.  Best to bring your laptop outside the trailer to 
hunt.  Higher the better; line of sight better.

Or, you can try the link below to give you a list of free hot spots in what 
ever state you are traveling.  Just drive to the area, and see if you can 
pull in the signal on your laptop:
