Andrew,

The tank in your Airstream is designed to carry full load, so why not 
fill it? Water in the well is as useless to a camper as fuel in the 
ground, runway behind him, and altitude above him are to a pilot.

I would be very leary of a partially filled tank in the back of a 
pickup. 800 pounds of water sloshing around back there will do some 
real thrilling things to your stability, even with baffles in the tank, 
and especially without baffles in the tank. Talk about dancing the four 
wheel funky chicken!
