I am pretty sure the inverter generators DO make a low DC voltage, then use 
conventional inverter technology to make 120VAC from that. I don't know 
what DC voltage is used in the others, but the big Yamaha EF3000iSEB model 
uses the same voltage as the starting battery (12V). The starting battery 
is used to supply the "boost" when needed. See:

Since the others provide a 12V charging connection, I would guess they are 
using 12V as the inverter input as well.

The inverter generators can generate 60 cycle AC even though the engine 
changes speed to match the load because the frequency is controlled by an 
electronic circuit. In the older style generators, the rotor had to spin 
exactly 60 times per second (3600 RPM) to generate 60 cycle power.
