Re: [A/S] Stick shift for towing? Technology has advanced

Woody,
Although I've not driven an off-road vehicle with an auto, I've driven on
plenty of ice and snow. I personally find it very hard to take off with an
auto on slippery surfaces because I can't tell if the TC is slipping or if
the wheels are spinning. With the stick, I can tell IMMEDIATELY if I've lost
traction.

Also, I find a stick easier to use if I want to move something "one inch",
especially if there's a bit of resistance. I find that with an auto, I give
it some throttle, then the thing makes a lurch all of a sudden and I've gone
"3 inches". I've used forklifts with both kinds of transmissions for things
like moving/placing machinery, and I'd far prefer a stick/clutch.

Service life can be very good or very bad with either unit. Much depends on
the maintenance and how it's used, a properly maintained auto that's not
abused will last every bit as long as a manual transmission that's cared
for. Assuming that both are designed properly, of course.
