I can't believe it, but my 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L's automatic is still
smooth as can be and it's got 193,000 original miles on it.  I know I'm on
borrowed time, but so far, so good.

I definitely prefer an automatic for driving off-road in 4WD low.  That's
why I got my Jeep with the auto (and because that's the only way I could get
the Full-Time 4WD option).  I never want to drive off-road with a stick
shift again.  It's also much easier and safer to drive with an automatic on
ice.  It's easy to smoothly apply power without breaking the tires loose.
