Chas,

All of the valves are made of the same material, probably steel and/or 
brass.  The difference between the steel tank valves and the aluminum 
tank valves is the length of the tube between the handle and the float, 
since the steel and aluminum tanks have different shapes on top.  If you 
went to a propane distributer and not a retail dealer, you probably got 
the correct valves.  The only way to tell is to take the valves out and 
measure the length of the tube.  There was an article in the Blue Beret 
recently regarding the different valves.
