FWIW, I keep my laptop lit up between the two front seats of my tow vehicle.
It runs Delorme mapping and sucks in satellite signals thru Earthmate GPS.

For driving assistance in unfamiliar areas it can't be beat!  A screen large
enough to see every pigtrail out there, and (ta-dum) a voice that tells you
which way to turn and how far/soon it will be.

The cost for this; less than  $150.00.
