No, not 2X4's - 1X2'x. Without the slides, the drawer just won't slide, especially on carpeting. I have mine *very* full and it is *very* heavy - the handles just make it easier to open. It *slides* on the 1X2's. I like your idea and think we will do the same thing with ours since our drawer is so heavy. Verna
