I agree with Steve if the OEM requires synthetic fluid, it is a MUST, 
however if the spec calls regular Mercon/Dexron fluid then use that.

The real culprit in transmission wear is heat and dirty fluid. I have a 
1991 Mustang 2.3l with an electronic 4 speed auto, it has 258,000 on the 
clock. The transmission has had the fluid and filter changed faithfully 
at 20-30K intervals depending on how I have been treating it. It shifts 
today just like the day I drove it off the show room floor, nice and 
crisp and no slippage. Believe me I have never taken it easy on the car, 
I have loaded it to the hilt on a regular basis, towed trailers of 
gravel, loaded enclosed trailers through the mountains, etc.

I suggest a second transmission cooler be added, the bigger the better 
and while your into oil coolers check to see if adding an engine oil 
cooler could benefit your vehicle, if it is not already equipped with one.

I firmly believe that proper preventative maintenance on both the 
transmission and engine, using the specified lubricants and changing 
them on a timely basis, will give the long and dependable service.
