we had room darkening roller shades in our '83.  They were great for keeping
out the hot sun, and the lights at night.  We have wooden blinds in the
living and dinette area, and aluminum in the kitchen, bath and bedroom in
our '88.
The aluminum makes noise when we get up during the night, neither of them
keep out the heat, but you can open them without having to raise them to see
out.  They are a bear to keep clean, and collect dust faster than greased
lightening.
We prefer the darkening roller shades.
