Richard, sorry to hear of your misadventure with your first Airstream
purchase. While it's too late for you, any listers contemplating the
purchase of an older Airstream might want to spend some time on the vintage
Airstream list (sign up at  www.airstream.com) and looking through the
archives at www.tompatterson.com where all the problems you encountered and
more are discussed at length. It might still be worth your time even now.
