If it was me, I'd shift into my Missouri mode and make them "show me" that
all appliances worked - even if I had to come back on several occasions.
Likewise, I'd take all the time I needed to be certain I wasn't being
shined.
That furnace may have done you a big favor. Any seller who would minimize
the significance of freezing rain and snow should prompt you to run up more
than one red flag - regardless of how experienced you and your husband are.
While you are "visiting" them in the weeks to come, it may be smart to
insist on a brake test that "satisfies" you. Translation: the brakes work
correctly rather than just working.
And if you're around when they pull a wheel to inspect for a cracked brake
lining, ask if they are going to clean and repack the bearings. If not,
that's another confession.
It's okay to be trusting person, but not a gullible one.
