I knew a lady with a 1970's an F250 and if my memory is correct the 
rear axle was set back to accomodate long slide in campers. Compare 
yours to newer F 250's.  This would increase stability for towing.

I have a 1985 F250  4x4 with a torsion bar both front and rear.
I believe the older F 250's used a bar on the rear, connected to the 
axle on one side and the frame on the other side.  Fords use leaf 
springs on the rear, right?   Leaf springs are more stable than coils 
in my opinion.  
I also used to have two 1970's  F250  2x4 and with a 9 1/2' slide in 
I find that the 1985 4x4 is much more stable, but I believe that is 
sprung heavier.   A camper special would also have heavy springs.
 
You did't say what you are towing, did you?
I found that the "threads" were kind of mixed up on two posts, I am
