[A/S] Re: awning for 1959 Pacer (19')

Kate and Jose:
I looked at the Vintage Airstream Photos and it looks like the Pacer 
has an awning rail that is an aliminum "C" shape, is that right ?
This is designed for a manual roll up awning, to use this you have 
two choices:
1) If you go look at some hard top tent trailers you will see a 
manual roll up awninig that stores in a zipper pouch on the side of 
the trailer when the unit is  folded down.  The only problem with 
this on an A/S is that you would need a ladder to roll up or roll 
out  the awning.

2) The second option is a removeable awning that you remove each time 
you take it down.   You select an awning fabric and have an 
upholstery shop  sew a rope into one side.  The rope should be about 
3/8" but you have to find out by trial and error.   This may sound 
difficult to pull through each time you set up but they are not if 
done right.  The rope needs to be longer than the awning.  About 4" 
from one end of the rope fasten a smaller cord that will pass through 
the side opening in the rail.   Since you can't "push a rope" you can 
use this cord to "pull" the awning through the rail.   I have done 
this on our son's hardtop tent trailer, works fine.

With a manual awning of course you need "tent poles", ropes and tent 
pegs.

You may have had a roll up awning in mind but I believe you would 
have some difficulty with that as I see the Pacer has the hinges at 
the front of the door, most A/S do not.  
For the life of me I can't figure out why, if Wally was so smart he 
put "suicide doors" on most of his trailers.
