FYI (limited): Chargers which "trickle" are a different animal than
those that maintain a "float" voltage.  As I understand it; trickle
never ends. Overcharging, and all it's attendant problems, is a
probability.  Wheras, a more sophisticated charger brings the battery to
a float (app. 13.8v) voltage and holds that voltage, never letting it
get higher.

As an aside, the regulator which came with my solar panels does keep a
float voltage.  When that's exceeded the input to the batteries is shut
off.  Kinda fun to watch on a sunny day.  Sorta like observing the
growth of grass...
