Update:

A couple of weeks ago I told the list I was replacing my AC and asked for 
advice. I eventually emailed AS and Dometic, but got only minimal help from 
them. I never did learn from Dometic if I could use a 15K BTU unit, or even 
use the heat pump version of either the 13.5 or the 15 in place of the 13.5 
penguin original on this '91 trailer.

I finally replaced it with the same-as-original 13.5k model Dometic 
Penguin, which fitted the drip pan properly, as you would expect. My local 
RV service technician had never replaced one on an AS before, so I 
discussed the job with him and he was prepared to look for the drip pan and 
not damage it as he worked. It all went well. And since it was the same 
model, I was able to switch over the heating element myself when I got it 
back home.

One extra thingie: I was able to use a Camping World web page printout to 
get my dealer to price match. Saved me $60 compared to this dealer's 
initial quote.
