Max,
 The reason lead acid batteries (wet cell) seem to need replacing yearly is
usually due to:

Running them down too far before recharging

and:

a poor charging technique. (over/under charging)

AGMs are sensitive to these issues also. Regular batteries should last at
least 3 years, or as long as 7 years if properly maintained. See Phred's
