Patti,
You can if you call customer service.  We were unable to send data while in
some remote spot where Verizon had agreements with other cell companies for
calls only, so we contacted Verizon and they set it up for us over the
phone.  No charge.  Now, you can't send email, but you can receive and surf
the net, so maybe the Bamnet minutes can be reserved for the messages you
send.
