Re: [A/S] Trailer Insurance Coverage: Can this be right?
When I talk to folks about insuring their trailers, I liken it to
insurance on a cottage on wheels.
You need the same sort of coverage in general as you would have on your
cottage, namely coverage for damage to the trailer and coverage for
liability arising out of the use of the trailer.
If you are insured by the same insurer that covers your own home and tow
vehicle, very often the insurer will add the trailer to the auto cover
for "own damage" and extend the liability from the home coverage to
include use and operation of the trailer while it is unattached from the
tow vehicle. While it's attached to the tow vehicle, liability for
damage or injury arising out of the trailer in an accident, is covered
under the tow vehicle's liability coverage.
As a previous poster has pointed out, you need to go back to the
insurance company and revisit the coverage, as it seems they've left
off own-damage coverage to the trailer, in the mix.
