We, too, have the nationwide Verizon plan, no long distance and no roaming.  
When I had some problems with my WordPerfect software I called their tech 
center.  Since it was not a toll call, I used my Verizon phone.  After 
spending about three hours in several calls to them, I was told I was calling 
Canada.  I "was" charged by Verizon and the phone bill was huge!
