Barbara,
 The water heater can "pop off" if there's no place for the water to go when
it expands from heating. If you drain it completely (shut off the burner
before draining!), then refill it, it'll have an air cushion which should
prevent the popping off until the air cushion disappears again. Better yet,
install one of those little ShurFlo accumulators in the system. That will
smooth out the water delivery when using the pump and prevent the pop-off
situation. I have one and it's a great improvement to the water system.
