I don't think you will ever go wrong with a 3/4 ton truck.  Many 1/2 ton
trucks, especially Ford, ride like cars with very soft springs.  I have had
both and would never go back to a 1/2 ton again.  A long wheel base truck
will be harder to maneuver, but will be more stable on the road when big
trucks go by.  The trailer won't wag the truck back and forth as easily.
Also, most drivetrain parts are heavier duty.  Bigger brakes.
