Tank components are made primarily of plastic are much more threatened by 
petroleum derivatives. Rock salt is inert to most plastics. The salt lowers the 
freezing temperature of water. Thus you can use your toilet in cold weather 
while the heater keeps you warm. In all modern era Airstream's the ducted 
heated is directed into the holding tank area or the tanks are above the floor 
and exposed to heat, further extending the usable temperature range.
