Nick,
I would think that since the water heater went out when the furnace
failed you ran out of gas.
If it was real cold, and your propane tank is about empty, there will
not be enough heat outside to vaporize the liquid into a gas.  I found
this chart one time

As you can see, if it is 20 degrees and your tank is near empty, a
30,000 btu furnace will run out of gas.
However in the morning when the temperature was about 45 degrees you
would have enough gas to run everything.
