Jim,
 I never worry about the level in the tanks. The automatic
regulator/switcher changes to the full tank when one goes empty; I check the
red indicator every couple or 3 days when I feel a tank is about to go dry,
then flip the switch, disconnect the empty tank and take it for a refill.

Both the water and strip methods require you to be drawing gas for them to
work.
