Conrad & Tricia,

US Catalytic, the maker of your Oympian has a web site with directions for all of their 
heaters. Check out the directions for the Wave 3100 at 
http://www.uscatalytic.com/heater_index.html  
The Wave series are an updated, but functionally identical unit to your 3100.
The basics are:
Rotate knob to Start
Press in and hold for 10 seconds
Push Piezo lighter 1 or 2 times or until flame ignites on starter
Hold knob in for 45 to 60 seconds to allow catalytic action to start
Release knob and turn to High setting
Allow heater to operate on High for 10 minutes before adjusting to Low or Medium
