I had a similar problem with the 'A' frame on our '68, but the nasty 
stuff was all in front of the trailer body. Didn't know for sure until 
we cut off the 'A' frame, of course.

I bought a new hitch assy. from Northern, some 4" channel and 3 1/2" 
flat stock from the local welding shop, and fabricated a new 'A' frame. 
Welded it on and it was good as new.
