Jim,
  The detector under discussion is a test instrument, meant to find IF 
you have a propane plumbing leak, and exactly which fitting is leaking. 
It's similar to the refrigerant detector used by your mechanic when he 
works on the A/C in your car.

Your detector is a general AREA detector, meant to protect you from 
propane buildup in your living area.
