I'm guessing that if the batteries were shorted by
freezing, it must have been the batteries themselves
that froze.

The best way to prevent this is to charge the
batteries.  Their freezing temperature is MUCH lower
when fully charged.  Because they gradually
self-discharge, it might be necessary to recharge them
occasionally (once a month or so) even when they are
not being used.
