Ed,

If you do a webcrawler search for "amprobe" you will find a number of clamp on 
type meters that will measure your current draw.  If you know an electrician 
he would probably have on in his tool kit, perhaps you could borrow it for a 
couple of minutes, which is all it would take.

Where are you located?  I could show you what to do if you are in the NY metro 
area.
