I had the same situation when I bought my '78 last year, thought they were 
all out of adjustment. I sprayed the shafts with silicone and PRESTO they 
were back in adjustment. They work easily today a year later. I tried 
adjusting one before spraying with silicone and wasn't looking forward to 
doing them all, thankfully the spray eliminated my problem
