A diesel truck does not "freewheel" downhill. It has compression 
braking, like a gas engine. Just not as much. Shift it down and it 
will slow, very much like a gas engine. Even with the rather steep 
grades here in the Ozarks I have never had a problem with my 25' 
Airstream trying to push my '94 Chevy diesel down hill.

If I had a much heavier trailer I would probably want an engine 
brake, however.
