I towed generally in third.  I would sometimes put it
in overdrive when I was going downhill just to get the
RPM's down a bit.  I would also tow in OD when it was
flat but as soon as it started to shift back and forth
I would put it in 3rd.  I also kept the fluid changed
at regular intervals.  The transmission problem in my
1/2 ton was a torque converter that was slipping.  I
towed a trailer with it about 2 years before the
problem started...also the problem started at about
120,000 miles on the clock.  My understanding from
other Suburban owners is that the transmissions were
weak during those years.  Still, I can't help think
that I contributed to the problem.  One of the reasons
that I went to the 3/4 ton suburban is the fact that
the transmissions are much stronger, as well as other
factors.
